Cottonwood News – Kris Neri, award-winning author and former owner of The Well Red Coyote bookstore in Sedona, returns to the Verde Valley to present a free workshop for writers, aspiring writers, and readers on Thursday, May 19 at 4:00 p.m. at The Studio B (Old Town Center for the Arts) in Cottonwood.

Neri will share the techniques needed to capture a vivid sense of place, for writers of fiction, non-fiction and memoirs. She will discuss how including a strong sense of place enriches your writing. Additionally, Neri will explain how to turn a static background into an active part of your storytelling, as well as how to inject perspective, mood, tone and emotional color into the setting.

The concept of framework is also important for readers. Well-designed settings allow the reader to fully immerse themselves in a book, using author descriptions to enhance the reading experience. Neri will use his most recent book, Hopscotch Lifeto illustrate how she incorporates a sense of place into the story she tells. Hopscotch Lifea story of acceptance in all your glory, is set in the fictional northern Arizona town of Applewood, and even features an independent bookstore as the focal point for part of the novel.

Neri is a multiple honored author. In addition to Hopscotch Life, a recent winner of the New Mexico-Arizona Book Award, she also writes the humorous mysteries of Tracy Eaton, featuring the daughter of eccentric Hollywood stars, and the magical series Samantha Brennan & Annabelle Haggerty, which features a questionable medium who teams up with a modern FBI agent-goddess. Books will be available for purchase and signing after the workshop.

Neri teaches writing for the prestigious UCLA Extension School Writers’ Program and other organizations. She and her husband Joe owned and operated The Well Red Coyote bookstore in Sedona for ten years, and they now reside in Silver City, New Mexico, along with a few fur babies.

Studio B is part of the Old Town Center for the Arts complex located at Fifth Street and Main in Cottonwood.
