Bookstore and BA defend a diverse future in book sales

Our friends at Bookshop.org have teamed up with the Booksellers Association (BA) to launch a new initiative encouraging the opening of new bookstores serving underrepresented communities.

New Futures aims to inspire the opening of new boutiques that will create new routes for various books to reach the hands of all readers.

In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on diversity in publishing, with movements for greater representation in publishing itself, as well as the acquisition of author titles including voices have historically been under-represented.

Through a mentoring and assessment process, New Futures will provide hands-on support to help shortlisted applicants develop their business plan for a multi-channel bookstore.

Mentorship will come from industry partners in retail, technology and the book business through a focused program of education and support to provide participants with everything they need to grow their business.

The successful finalists will receive all the tools they need to launch a bookstore that creates new and enduring routes for a variety of books to enter the hands of more readers and help build dynamism and resilience. British communities.

The initiative encourages applications from under-represented communities who believe they have the potential to create a viable book-selling business, including:

  • Individuals who identify as black and other marginalized ethnicities
  • LGBTQIA + people
  • People from the working class
  • People with physical disabilities
  • People with neurodiversity
  • People who suffer from mental health problems
  • People with learning disabilities

Applications are open now, until Friday, November 12. The shortlist will be announced on January 21, 2022.
